The Candlewood Lake User’s Boaters Association (Club A) was founded in 2014 and is incorporated as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization. Its mission is to serve as a united voice for the lake communities, shoreline residents, and users of Candlewood Lake and the surrounding lakes, all of which are owned by FirstLight, headquartered in Albany, New York.
At the time of its founding, FirstLight was petitioning the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a license to use the waters of Candlewood Lake and neighboring lakes to produce hydroelectric power. As part of this licensing process, FirstLight was required to submit a Shoreline Management Plan (SLMP) to FERC, outlining its commitments to protecting the lakes' shorelines, preserving the lakes as recreational resources, and maintaining the water quality of Candlewood Lake as a backup reservoir.
Club A, with its substantial membership and support from both state and federal representatives, played a critical role in influencing the regulations and requirements included in the SLMP.
Twenty years have passed since the initial SLMP approval, and it is now due for review. Many users, communities, and shoreline residents feel that FirstLight has not upheld the spirit of its commitments under the SLMP. The time has come to revitalize Club A as a strong advocate to ensure that Candlewood and its surrounding lakes remain accessible and enjoyable for all, rather than serving solely as a revenue-generating resource for FirstLight.
Club A’s mission is to unite our community, creating a collective voice that represents each of you as individuals.
We will pool our resources and your concerns to ensure everyone has access to clear information about issues such as legal requirements, permit processes, and other aspects of enjoying Candlewood Lake.
Membership fees will support legal representation for individuals, community members, and Club A’s initiatives. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, our records will be publicly accessible.
